Oil Painting "July Meteors" in Berkeley Art Center

July Meteors

The title of this painting, July Meteors, originates from a Chinese phrase, 七月流火, which means that in July, when stars move westbound, cooler weather arrives soon; I have always been drawn to the mystic and somewhat fatalistic image of this concise yet profound phrase, without much understanding.

Right before the Fourth of July this year, suddenly there was some unexpected disturbances took place in my life and I was mostly assailed by shock and dismay, out of all things, and soon I was enveloped in a chill, much colder than the already too cool San Francisco summer. It was the realization of abrupt and decisive change caused me much alarm and disquietness and then I suddenly understand the meaning of that phrase, and the helplessness sedimented through thousands years of valiant and often futile struggle, and composed this rather evocative abstract piece, to channel my compound feelings.

I entered this piece for a juried exhibition and silent auction at Berkeley Art Center and it was accepted for the event.

Wonderful Member Show at Berkeley Art Center

Green - Berkeley Art Center Member Show 2010 _ 9411

This year's Berkeley Art Center (BAC) Members Showcase, Green, which runs from December 11, 2010 through January 23, 2011 has some very interesting works, perhaps something to do with BAC's decision to increase the dimension limit increase from 20 inches to 36 inches.  The increased limit definitely liberated me somewhat and I can submit a painting otherwise won't be eligible - Rape Fields, 27"x27" (see below image, on the back panel, about four small pieces).

The artist's reception took place on 11 December, 5:30-7:30.  Due to a prior commitment I was only able to stop by before the official reception hours, but it did allow me to take pictures and videos leisurely.

Below are images of art works attracted my attentions:

Annual Memeber Show at Berkeley Art Center Opens Tomorrow

Tomorrow evening from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, the annual member show at Berkeley Art Center opens to the public with artists reception. This time, Art Center increased the limit of the dimension and I was able to present my more representative work, instead of small enough to fit in.

I'll present my work "Rape Fields" for this month and a half long exhibit:

Rape Fields / 油菜田 / Canola Fielder

This year's theme is "Green", following last year's "Red". Are we going to have "Yellow" next year? Hope not.

RED - Members Show at Berkeley Art Center

The annual members show at Berkeley Art Center opened today. I contributed a small piece "Grail":

The theme of this year is RED. There are many artworks for people to ponder. Naturally, the color red was overwhelming but many other hues injected variety to the show.

Berkeley Art Center's Annual Members Showcase -

Berkeley Art Center's Annual Members Showcase has a theme this year - RED.

The official website says: "An annual tradition, Berkeley Art Center’s members showcase includes work in all media from its artist-level members, presented salon-style. Featuring myriad points of view and levels of accomplishment, this exhibition celebrates the diversity and vibrancy of our cultural community. This year’s theme, “RED”, is inspired in part by a recent comment from artist Tom Marioni during a presentation at Berkeley Art Center. Be creative with your interpretation of this theme, in the spirit in which it was intended!"

The exhibit on be viewed from December 12, 2009 – January 24, 2010.

Opening Reception: Saturday, December 12, 3-6pm

I will exhibit my oil painting: Grail. I do believe that it is red enough:
