Driving on the New East Span of San Francisco Bay Bridge

San Francisco Bay Bridge, linking San Francisco to East Bay, including Oakland and Berkeley, had its New East Span completed lately, replacing the section damaged during earthquake and though repaired still seismically unsound.

In the past, I reported on the new East Span when I drove on the old East Span, admiring from a short distance the the new structure soon to be open, and finally, in last December, we drove through the new East Span of the Bay Bridge for the first time, and saw it from different angles.

We came from Berkeley and below are some images taken when we approached the Bridge from the East Bay:





It was a lovely day, an untypically warm winter day even for the mild San Francisco Bay Area, and consequently, we had a clear and lovely view of the bridge during the day time.  Once we got on the new East Span, a series of lighting poles and suspending cables led us to the sole tower supporting the self-anchored suspension bridge:









Then, we went through a tunnel to pass through Treasure Island then got on to the old West Span, and finally into San Francisco.  From the last few photos, one could see the Golden Gate Bridge and the skyline of San Francisco:






On the same day, we returned East Bay via the Bay Bridge at night.  First, some images taken when we drove near Downtown San Francisco in order to get onto the Bridge:





Going east, we drove on the lower deck of the West Span, and once through the tunnel, we entered the new East Span of the Bay Bridge.



The new East Span was beautifully illuminated at night, like a serene beauty, constant yet ever changing, presenting her enchantment from every viewpoint.  Near the end of the Bridge, we saw the remaining of the old East Span to our right, with the final few sections lit, rather eerily. Casting our sight further, we saw the busy harbor of Oakland across from the Bay:











Therefore, the conclusion of the lovely rides on the Bay Bridge.
