Ursula von Rydingsvard

My recent visit to the Cantor Arts Center at Stanford University introduced me to an amazing New York based, Germany-born artist Ursula von Rydingsvard. I saw an installation by her at the entrance to the new wing housing collections of Ruth and Robert Halperin.

The piece features, Pink Companion, 1991, is a big, but less monumental to her standard, installation with cedar wood and graphite. It has two sections and the playing with patterns and contrast of these patterns and dimensions of the elements are striking. The rich coloration of the rustic looking sculpture is intriguing, simultaneously inviting and forbidding.
