Featured Installation - Wilting Flowers

Recently I created an installation Wilting Flowers and fully documented the creation and installation processes.

This new effort was spurred by my continued fascination with paper material – delicate, malleable, and transitory, characteristics well suited for hinting at, versus representing, a world full of fragility and vulnerability, constantly under the threat of total destruction.

My local newspaper, “The San Francisco Chronicle”, served as the foundation: a segment of our time, distilled and encapsulated. Inky strokes and splashes were added to the newspaper sheets, which were folded and tied up to form large flowers, with aluminum wires wrapped with dyed twine as stems.
For the background, I chose five sheets of plain white paper, streaked with similar black strokes of ink diluted with various amount of water.

To install, I attached these background paper to a wall in an uneven row, then affixed those flowers, 13 total, to those sheets. There were no strict rules about how to lay out the background sheets and flowers, as long as the finished installation looked balanced, and the flowers largely faced outwards.

I have installed these sheets and flowers on different surfaces – a colorful graffitied plywood wall, or somber looking wooden fences, at different times of the day. The differences between the surfaces, the different light cast on the wall or fence, background sheets and paper flowers, all contributed to a murmuring polyphony.

Stringed White Dresses - The Process of a New Installation

Lately, I was inspired and several exciting ideas propelled me to work diligently to complete one installation last Friday.  I documented the last stage of the process - painting background, wiring strings to the frames and final assembling, including the paper origami white dresses folded before.  Below are several pictures and an edited, composite video of this final dash, all recorded on Friday, 22 March 2013:

Congregation - My New Art Installation

Continue to work on my installation project, finally I completed the very first idea which started my desire to make installation projects.

This project is called congregation, which consists of a tree, or an upright branch, with origami chairs hanging from the twigs.  The various sized and patterned chairs, facing various directions, without the occupiers, represented a congregation without its heads or thoughts, and can be seen as empty, hilarious, sad, or melancholic, depending on the viewers mood, lighting, and even wind condition.  These variants justify installation other than painting, I think.

A New Installation - Chairs Installation, November 2012

Recently, I completed one of my long-planned installation project - Chairs Installation, November 2012.  I folded origami chairs, using glossy musical performance programs and hung them on branches I collected, or attached them to a metal mesh directly.  The branches also were also hung on the metal mesh, which was in turn framed by wood poles for structural stability.  The completed piece then was hung on the ceiling and it was in this position the installation was photographed and videotaped.

I think this installation was quite beautiful to behold and it had an understated melancholy and a sense of time being suspended.  Breathed a sigh of relief.

Paper Boat Installations

Continuing my installation effort, I assembled a fleet of paper boats and deployed them on a dry deck.   I used this grouping of the paper boat to explore the relationship of individuals and collective identity, and order and chaos:

Making Art With Mother in China

When I visited my parents in China last May, I invited my mother to make some origami boats and dresses with me, so I could show my family the concept of my ongoing installations.

I made several very crude demos of installations.  Though these photos below don't reflect fully my ideas, I still cherish them, perhaps more for sentimental values.  According to my mother, these paper boats and white dresses still occupy their living-room in Shenyang.

Paper Boats, Chairs Installations and More

Recently, while making origami 3D models for a painting study, I had an epiphany on art making.  Not only the desired painting, but the 3D origami models were art in their own rights.

I was making origami chairs, boats, and white dresses and I had very clearly defined way of arranging these tiny actors, on stages large or small.  Making these elements was a time-consuming effort but with the small fleet I have assembled so far, I could tell some fascinating stories already:
