Featured Painting - Piñatas

Through a blurry, fluid, and background randomly dissected by some diagonal strokes, several uncertain, twisted, and sad faces emerged, telegraphing the terrified and oppressed people in our uncertain and increasingly inhospitable time and climate, and they were my observation and report in my recent painting Piñatas. The fear, the apprehension in their averting eyes, and the tears streaming down their downcast faces, pulled in and turned away the viewers by our collective shame over our helpless fates and our inability to avoid disasters. We were all beaten piñatas.

Featured Painting - Dream Forest

Dream Forest continued my exploration of monochromatic paintings consisting of interlocking patterns and shades, some simple, some more intricate. This small gouache painting depicted an imaginary forest at night time, when moon light shimmered over truncated trunks and branches, contrasting starkly with dark surrounding. Also, the image somehow resembled a microscopic view of organism, a tiny sliver of macrocosm.

Featured Painting - Interlocked

A landscape as an enigma is the impression of my monochromatic oil painting, Interlocked, which depicts a semi-abstract, difficult to decipher landscape, under the threat of heavy and broadly zigzagged clouds in the upper region, while underneath, an orderly and calm swatch of staggered and slightly angled roofs, indicates order, and furthermore, social hierarchy and constraints. The dripping liquids permeating the landscape lends the notion of connectedness and the interlocking nature of the environment, natural or man-made.

Featured Painting – Brook

My little idyllic painting, Brook, depicted a thin stream snaking through a quiet grove, seen through imposing placed black trunks in the foreground, and enclosed by delicate silhouettes in the background, behind shimmering bright light like a liquid curtain. The sedate creek, painted impasto, with paints dragged downward rough bottom edges, as if a living creature planting its roots or sinking its teeth into the meadow; meanwhile, its varying somber colors, and the impossible spatial relationship between the tree trunks and the seemingly floating creek forks, simultaneously ups and downs, and in front of and behind those tree trunks, created a sense of disorientation, uneasiness, and otherworldliness.

A Glimspse of Salesforce Transbay Center in San Francisco

DSCN2848 _ Transbay Transit Center

Several weeks ago, the multiple-billion dollars Salesforce Transbay Center in San Francisco opened with great fanfare. On August 25, I took a transbay bus and caught a glimpse of the wonderful building, and the rooftop garden, before two cracks on steel beams forced a hopefully temporary closure two days ago.

The most dominating part of the complex was the slick and phallic Salesforce Tower, which was actually not part of the terminal, but did provide an interesting contrast to the delicate, veiled exterior of the horizontal Transbay Center.

Our bus came to the center via an exclusive bus bridge, at an extremely low speed.

Once entered the building, we had another view of the lattice façade from inside. Intriguing.

There was a certain "public art" inside the terminal building, such as the LCD display, and the tower itself.

The best part of the complex was the rooftop public space - gardens, walkway, theater, etc.

What a shame that two cracks of the supporting steel beams at SF Transbay Transit Center forced its closure. Hopefully, it would be deemed safe soon. But, could we ever trust it? Just as the troubled San Francisco Bay Bridge.

Featured Painting - July Meteors

July Meteors / 七月流火 / Juli Meteoren, Oil on Canvas, 20" x 16", Completed in 2014

The title of this painting, July Meteors, originates from a Chinese phrase, 七月流火, which means that in July, when stars move westbound, cooler weather arrives soon; I have always been drawn to the mystic and somewhat fatalistic image of this concise yet profound phrase, without much understanding.

Right before the Fourth of July this year, suddenly there was some unexpected disturbances took place in my life and I was mostly assailed by shock and dismay, out of all things, and soon I was enveloped in a chill, much colder than the already too cool San Francisco summer.

It was the realization of abrupt and decisive change caused me much alarm and disquietness and then I suddenly understand the meaning of that phrase, and the helplessness sedimented through thousands years of valiant and often futile struggle, and composed this rather evocative abstract piece, to channel my compound feelings.
