"Crowded by Beauty" Exhibit at McGuire Real Estate, Berkeley

McGuire Real Estate at Elmwood, Berkeley, continues its effort to support local artists, with its new eight-person show, "Crowded by Beauty", including works in a multitude of mediums: sculpture, acrylics, ceramics, watercolor, oil and photography. The featured artists are Philip Hall, Matthew Felix Sun, Camila Valdez, Jill McLennan, Deborah Schilling, Sarah Whitecotton, Judy Wiener, and Susan Erickson.



Four paintings of mine were included in the exhibitions are Forest Within, Birches, Net, and One Fine Day, all played a bit of optical illusion, with a bit twist of psychology.

There were many interesting artworks and it was a thrill for me to be in their company.







The turn out was quite wonderful. The place was indeed crowded by beauty.

Free Art at Pro Arts Gallery, Oakland

In a week, you may visit Pro Arts Gallery in Oakland's Free Gallery Exhibit to grab a piece or two artworks offered for free, as part of the Free Utopian Projects.

Pro Arts Gallery stated that

The Free Gallery, by Free Utopian Projects*, is a new exhibition presenting free artwork, found objects and art ephemera to the public.

The Free Gallery is both an interactive experience of an alternative art economy, as well as a study of art as a consumer product. Who makes art? Who exhibits art? Who buys art? The Free Gallery explores the collapse of these distinctions by offering a subverted gallery experience where not only admission is free, the art is too.

Participating artists donate work to the exhibition to be presented salon-style in a continually evolving cycle of giving and taking art. A 'Preview' will be held from Tuesday, February 26 to Friday, March 1 to allow viewers an exclusive preview of items that will be available free to the public from the Artists' Reception onwards. A practice of taking one work per person will be encouraged. The project proprietor Jocelyn Meggait will be onsite most gallery hours to discuss the project with visitors, coordinate artwork, and document the selection experience.

* Free Utopian Projects is an ongoing alternative art project exploring Utopian economic systems by creating free, socially active installations. Curator/proprietor/artist Jocelyn Meggait has installed Free Projects at Kala Art Institute, Mills College Art Museum, and most recently at the alternative art space A Temporary Offering in the Renoir Hotel, San Francisco.

Exhibit at Seoul/Incheon International Airport

The Seoul/Incheon International Airport is one of the best transit airport with many very considerately designed space and amenities to help travelers.

In the rest area, there always was exhibit, showcasing Korean art or Korean culture.  Last May, when I visited my parents in Manchurian Shenyang, I transferred in  Seoul/Incheon International Airport twice and saw a very interesting exhibit - From Birth to Adulthood, with traditional toys, costumes, hairpieces, hats, and tools for scholars, demonstrated the curve of Korean people from infants, children, adolescents to men and women, from a particular aspect.





   







 













The exhibit was concise, informative and beautiful to behold.  I had wonderful time looking at this exhibit, between my times spent in the free massage chair, free internet, free shower and free movie.

Art Displays in San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

When I travel, I like to be in the airport early, so as to avoid the anxiety of being short of time.  Besides, many modern airports, such as San Francisco International Airport (SFO) often has wonderful art installations and exhibitions to enjoy.

Last month, I traveled to Shenyang, China to see my relatives and had seen a particularly wonderful installation at SFO:









Besides this installation, there were some nice and whimsical ceramic displays and I was quite taken by the little animals:









I also found the bird mural fun, which had buttons linked to the birds' sounds, just like the two stools below, also formed like a xylophone.

Student Exhibits at Worth Ryder Gallery, University of California, Berkeley

Last week, I attended the opening of two simultaneous student exhibits at Worth Ryder Gallery, University of California, Berkeley.  The gallery was affiliated with Art Practice Department and it showcased the many young talents, yearning to make marks on the art scenes.

The first show was a sculpture (aka installation) exhibit.  The topic for each artists were written on a piece of paper and put into the "oracle" bucket (see picture below) for drawings.  The often deceptively simple labels were to inspire and challenge the students to come up with their own take on these themes.

The second exhibit was called "Falling Below" which featured some smaller scaled, but no less forceful, installations (or multimedia projects).  They were very intriguing and even pretty to behold (artists might hate this but it was true).
