"Fresh Works VII" Juried Exhibition in Pleasanton

My oil painting, The March of Time, was accepted to a juried exhibition, titled "Fresh Works VII" in Harrington Gallery at Firehouse Arts Center, Pleasanton.







The opening reception on May 6 attracted many visitors, eager to see many wonderful works, several by local artists.















During the opening reception, my work was awarded an Honorable Mention Award, by the juror Ryan Reynolds, Assistant Professor of Art at Santa Clara University. Reynolds talked about the difficulty of choosing included works and winner from many submissions, and elaborated on the criteria he used for his decisions. He was looking for works demonstrating unique and well thought-out visions or ideas, and artist's ability to execute and present such ideas.

Fresh Works VII ran from May 6 to June 3, 2017. In concurrence to this juried exhibition, there was a one-person show “View Beyond the Gate” in the lobby areas of the Firehouse Arts Center, featuring works by Glenn Carter (May 3 to June 10, 2017), whose work was,”rooted in the intuitive response to materials and mark making.”






Quite an inspiring exhibition and I am honored to be part of the show.

Group Exhibitions in Seattle, Berkeley and San Diego & a Publication

Last year was a fruitful year for me - two more paintings published by Pomona Valley Review, and I participated group shows at two galleries in Berkeley, and for the first time, in Evergreen Association of Fine Arts Gallery in Seattle, which just concluded last week.






The painting went to Seattle was a 2008 painting, Upstream, depicting struggling yet determined fish in stream.

Just before the year end, I got accepted into two group shows in Expressions Gallery, Berkeley and The Studio Door in San Diego - another city conquered.

My portraits of old women, Century's Greeting and Fruition will be exhibited at Expressions Gallery, 2035 Ashby Ave. Berkeley, California, 94703:
January 17, 2015 - April 10, 2015.  Opening night: January 17, 6-9 pm.

 


The painting to be shipped to San Diego is another animal painting, Crow, depicting a lone crow in a desolate urban space, and the show is aptly titled "The Crow Show: A Tribute to Raven".

My lucky abstract painting, July Meteors, has just be published by an online literary journal, Shark Reef, based in San Juan Islands of Washington State, after it made an appearance at an exhibition/auction, Collect!, in Berkeley Art Center last year.  Another piece published by Shark Reef, is a drawing, Ink Drawing Night City 3.

Finally, one of my three paintings included in the last Expressions Gallery show, Changes, was chosen by Berkeley Planning and Development Development (2120 Milvia St) for the gallery's Off-site Shows: February 6 - July 31, 2015, and the display is open to view from Monday to Thursday, 9 AM - 4 PM.

Oil Painting "Upstream" Goes to Seattle

Last week, I shipped to Seattle my 2008 oil painting, Upstream, which has been selected for the juried show, 2014 Evergreen Association of Fine Arts (EAFA) Open Exhibition, at EAFA Gallery in the Seattle Design Center (5701 Sixth Avenue South, Suite P292, Seattle, WA 98108).

This modest painting, measured 24" by 18", semi-abstract in style, clearly influenced by Chinese ink painting, depicts a fish or two struggles to swim upstream, against the current.  It is fitting for the painting to travel to Seattle, because it was in that city when I witnessed an amazing salmon run in Chittenden Locks Fish Ladder several years ago.

 

This painting was not a frank documentation of that fish ladder scene; rather, when I painted it, I was trying to capture a free spirit, a spirit to overcome adversaries.  I deliberated chose a black and white color scheme, and a bold, almost abstract outline, as I was mostly interested in something elemental, less representational.

This work surely has a charmed life and earned a fair bit of recognitions - in 2009, it was published in The William and Mary Review by The College of William and Mary, Virginia, Volume 47.

Changes Exhibition Opened at Expressions Gallery, Berkeley

“Changes: Seasonal, Environmental and Life” opened last night at Expressions Gallery in Berkeley, and the show ends on 9 January 2015. Gallery Hours: Wed - Sat 12 - 5 PM  Sunday 12 - 3 PM and by appointment.

My three paintings were chosen for the show are One Fine Day, At Home, and Lake (from left to right):

 

It was a fun night - nice music, wine and snacks and I met several new fellow artists and some old friends who came to see my works.  Here are some images from the opening reception:
